Snowed so hard that the roof caved in.... |
OK, since I just got inside from shoveling my driveway AND roof (don't ask), and it's not even freakin January yet...I'm in the mood for excellent suggestions for one of my all-time favorite Dead toons...BROWN EYED WOMEN...which I feel is often underrated and overlooked.
Love the tune, love the lyrics, and every winter I seem to love it even more. This song's best renditions are usually marked by an outstanding Jerry riff in the bridge jam leading to the verse about Delilah Jones being the mother of twins (two times over and the rest were sins)...one of Hunter's greatest lines...and may I offer up Exhibit A from a little show you may have heard of:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd77-05-08.sbd.hicks.4982.sbeok.shnfMore BEW burners from any era most welcomed.
(Btw, if you are stopping by 5/8/77 to hear this version, note the ridiculous count of 203--that's TWO HUNDRED AND THREE--reviews of the show for this Matrix version alone.)

Hey Grendal,
Thisis one you might not try otherwise:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd81-03-10.glassberg.wise.7630.sbeok.shnfIf I remember correctly (I don't have speakers on this machine) - Jerry gives it an emotional bang after the "Drink down a bottle and be Ready to kill" line.
This is a nice show with a lot of good playing - Mickey knocks down part of his Kit during 1/2 step and when he jumps back in with a little drum roll, the crowd loves it.

Re: Snowed so hard that the roof caved in.... |
Excellent suggestions all! I thank you...
i especially echo the 5/9/77 and 5/13/77 versions...and agree that the 5/13 show in particular is a hidden gem overshadowed by so many surrounding incredible shows in May '77. (The Scarlet>Fire on 5/13 is in my Top 3 of all-timers.)
Will def. check out that '81 version, which i am not familiar with.
Liamfinnegan also pointed out a while ago a blistering (if slightly sloppy) '78 version...MAY be from 4/6/78 but i can't recall now...there's a Jerry jam included that melts faces and speakers alike..if Liam remembers and can chime in, great.
Gonna be jamming to all these suggestions thru the long VT winter!

Grendel
As Yesss in Portland pointed out, the BEW from 11-4-77 is one to check out, but check out the Aud version:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd77-11-04.moore.jupile-weiner.15208.sbeok.shnfIt gets a rightful mean edge to it and the crowd plays it up to the hilt.
Enjoy!
